Problem
Bruntons Propellers (Bruntons) manufacture high performance marine propellers for fast patrol boats, navies and boat owners requiring performance propellers.
To diversify its product range, Bruntons, working with Southampton University developed a fully automatic variable pitch propeller. However, soon after launch of ‘Autoprop’, Bruntons found that their manufacturing facility was unable to meet the phenomenal demand.
To make full use of Autoprop’s potential, it was decided that a well-equipped and well-organised supplier was required to engineer the product. Bruntons considered that they needed not just a supplier, but also a dependable partner.
Solution
Whilst Bruntons are experts in hydrodynamics and propulsion systems, they required a partner who could take total responsibility for design, manufacturing and related operations.
After a careful selection process, Tridan Engineering were chosen as the production partners and took over the whole project, buying in all raw materials, machining and finishing, assembling and submerged testing of the final product.
Outcome
Tridan has value engineered all the propeller components and production costs have been substantially reduced.
Autoprop is now recognised world wide, and due to its success Bruntons received the Queens Award for Technological Achievement for the Autoprop.
