Machine – Mazak Variaxis i700
Machining a motorsport gearbox case is a true test of precision, planning, and machine capability. Starting from a solid billet of aluminium 7075 – 430mm x 310mm x 140mm thick, the process demands absolute control at every stage to achieve the strength, accuracy, and weight reduction required for high-performance motorsport applications.
Using our largest 5-axis machining centre – a Mazak i700, the gearbox case is machined in multiple complex orientations to produce intricate internal webbing, deep core holes, and highly contoured external features. The 5-axis capability allows full access to difficult areas in a single setup, improving positional accuracy while reducing handling and lead time. Extensive material removal is carefully managed to maintain stability as the part transitions from a solid block into a lightweight, yet rigid structure.
Tight tolerances are critical throughout the component, particularly across bearing housings, sealing faces, and mounting features. Advanced probing, controlled machining strategies, and rigid fixturing ensure consistency and repeatability, even with deep features and thin wall sections.
The result is a highly accurate, lightweight gearbox case that meets the demanding standards of motorsport applications—demonstrating Tridan’s ability to deliver complex, high-performance components with confidence and repeatability.
